Enterprise IT leaders today face a critical challenge: enabling secure, compliant personal data management at scale while preparing for the AI-driven future.

Inrupt today announces the general availability of version 2.6 of Inrupt's Enterprise Solid Server (ESS), introducing the new Platform Management service that streamlines how organizations provision and manage user accounts at enterprise scale. This release builds upon our commitment to providing secure, compliant data infrastructure in the era of generative AI and Agentic Wallets™. This release adds seamless user onboarding and robust administrative controls for a streamlined deployment experience.

Automated User Provisioning for Enterprise Scale

ESS v2.6 introduces the Platform Management service, featuring a comprehensive Admin API that enables organizations to automate user account provisioning before users access the system. This capability addresses a critical enterprise requirement: the need to pre-configure user resources, establish initial data relationships, and ensure compliance workflows are in place before users begin interacting with their data.

The service supports multiple provisioning scenarios that align with diverse organizational processes. Whether your users already exist in your Identity Provider, register themselves through self-service workflows, or are managed entirely by your organization, the Platform Management service provides secure, phased provisioning that maintains proper access control throughout the entire process.

Secure Service Account Architecture

The Platform Management service uses a “Service Account” model designed around enterprise security principles. Service Accounts operate with carefully scoped privileges—they can provision user accounts and configure resources, but cannot access their own storage or issue credentials on their own behalf. This architectural design ensures clear separation of administrative functions from user operations.

Two-Phase Provisioning Lifecycle

ESS v2.6 introduces a two-phase provisioning model that balances administrative control with user autonomy. Unlike traditional user management systems that create permanent administrative access, ESS v2.6's two-phase model provides complete administrative control during setup, then atomically transfers full ownership to users - further strengthening Inrupt’s commitment to user control and empowerment, as encapsulated by Solid.

During the Setup Phase, Service Accounts act with administrative privileges to configure user resources—creating storage containers, uploading initial data, managing WebID profiles, and issuing Access Credentials for third-party services.

When the provisioning session is activated, an atomic transition occurs: Service Account privileges are immediately revoked, and complete ownership transfers to the identity owning the resources. This ensures there are no security gaps between administrative provisioning and user control, while providing organizations the flexibility to fully configure user environments before handoff.

Comprehensive Compliance and Audit Capabilities

Recognizing that regulatory compliance is paramount in enterprise deployments, the Platform Management service provides comprehensive audit event generation for all administrative operations. Every provisioning action—account creation, resource configuration, and activation—generates detailed audit events that include actor attribution, compliance proof data, and complete resource tracking.

These audit capabilities support compliance with regulations such as GDPR and CCPA by providing clear accountability trails, recording consent and proof data, and ensuring that all administrative actions are properly documented for regulatory review. The audit events integrate seamlessly with existing compliance monitoring systems and SIEM platforms.

API-First Enterprise Integration

The Platform Management service is built with enterprise integration in mind, providing APIs that can be incorporated into existing user provisioning workflows. Whether integrating with HR systems, customer onboarding platforms, or custom provisioning logic, the Admin API provides consistent, reliable endpoints for managing the provisioning lifecycle.

A Strengthened, Future-Proof Enterprise Wallet Infrastructure

As organizations prepare for agentic AI systems that need secure, user-controlled data access, ESS v2.6 provides the infrastructure foundation that effectively scales to millions of users and customers, while maintaining enterprise-grade security and compliance. This release reinforces Inrupt's position as the leading provider of enterprise-grade data infrastructure for the age of AI-driven applications.

By combining automated provisioning with robust security controls and comprehensive audit capabilities, organizations can deploy user-centric data platforms that scale to meet enterprise requirements while maintaining the compliance and security postures that modern regulations demand.

  • In Healthcare: "Enable patient data wallets with pre-configured compliance frameworks"
  • In Financial Services: "Provision customer data accounts with regulatory controls built-in"
  • In Enterprise B2C: "Onboard customers with their own data agency from day one"

The Platform Management service represents another step toward making enterprise wallet infrastructure accessible, manageable, and future-proof at global scale. Organizations using ESS v2.6 have the foundation to build compliant, user-centric data platforms while reducing operational overhead and preparing for the AI-driven applications that will define competitive advantage in 2025 and beyond.
